Business Equity and Small Business Concerns

Every business, whether it be a local construction company or a multibillion-dollar conglomerate, started as a small business. Being small in an arena of big players is a disadvantage. Those small business concerns work just as hard as larger operations, with fewer resources and a smaller market share. We, as a community, need to do everything in our power to uplift them when possible.

When it comes to dredging and marine construction, CMC knows just what it means to compete as a small business. CMC started in 1997 as a small marine towing company with one tugboat and two employees, including our founder Martin Curtin. CMC worked relentlessly with outreach programs to help bolster small businesses such as set aside contracts by the Army Corps of Engineers. CMC built a dredge and worked on these set aside contracts, which allowed us to grow. As of 2022, we are a proven, successful dredging firm that competes with the largest dredging companies, while still building our small business side of marine construction. CMC understands the value that small and disadvantage outreach programs and initiatives create, and we practice that same principle when structuring our own projects.

With every project, whether it’s the estimating phase pre-bid, in the mobilization phase post-award, or fully underway with construction, CMC makes every effort to utilize small business concerns, from the purchase of small consumables to subcontractors and suppliers undertaking a chunk of the work itself. CMC does so by reaching out to trusted firms within our own network, and by conducting outreach efforts, especially when working in new regions or areas distant from our home offices. We allow the small businesses concern players of the region to offer their services for any facet of our contracts, sometimes identifying gaps we didn’t even know we had. Small, women and/or minority owned, HUBzone business participation (just to name a few) proves to be beneficial not only for the firms that need it, but for us as a contractor by promoting development, utilization, and economic growth for all parties involved.

As we continue to seek new industry opportunities, we encourage you to help support our effort to build the utilization of Small Business Concerns within the marine industry.
