Curtin Maritime Completes Repower and Retrofit of Tug Gretchen C
Long Beach, CA. 07/28/2025:
Curtin Maritime is proud to announce the successful completion of a full repower and retrofit of the tug Gretchen C, a vessel with deep roots in the American maritime industry. Originally built in 1983 by Patti Marine Enterprises in Pensacola, Florida, Gretchen C holds the distinction of being the very first tug constructed by the esteemed shipyard.
Originally named Navasota, the tug served in the Gulf of Mexico and Hawaiian waters for decades, demonstrating the enduring quality of her construction. Curtin acquired the vessel in 2019, recognizing the potential in her “Patti Built” bones—strong, time-tested, and ideal for a second life supporting Curtin’s diverse and demanding operations.
“The size, design, and pedigree of this vessel made her a perfect candidate for a full rebuild,” said Curtin Maritime CEO and Founder, Captain Martin Curtin. “She’s a versatile platform, built tough, and deserving of a second life through our program.”
The repower and retrofit included all-new machinery and systems, Tier 4-compliant engines, a full rewire, upgraded electronics, a new interior, an upper wheelhouse, and other enhancements—ensuring the vessel now meets the highest standards for performance, efficiency, and environmental compliance.
In a heartfelt tribute to the vessel’s origins, Curtin renamed the tug Gretchen C—in honor of Mrs. Gretchen Patti, wife of Frank Patti and co-founder of Patti Marine Enterprises.
“Mrs. Patti represents the spirit and family legacy of the shipyard that built this tug,” said Curtin. “Naming the boat Gretchen C is our way of honoring that legacy while writing a new chapter for this remarkable vessel.”
Curtin first partnered with Patti Marine in 2020 on a major life-extension drydocking for one of its tugs. That successful project established a strong working relationship and lasting friendship between the two family-run companies—rooted in shared values and a commitment to quality. “It’s rare that we come across another company whose core values and work ethic align so closely with ours,” said Chase Henderson, VP of Operations & Commercial Development at Curtin Maritime, who managed that first drydocking project on-site in Pensacola.
“But when we do—like we did with Patti Marine—we make it a priority to continue that relationship. The trust and shared commitment to quality bring us back to Patti Marine for all of our shipyard work in the region.”
With the repower complete, Gretchen C is now fully integrated into Curtin Maritime’s fleet, ready to support a wide range of operations—from harbor towing to offshore project support. Her rebirth reflects Curtin’s ongoing commitment to innovation, sustainability, and honoring the legacy of American shipbuilding.
